Wellington, New Zealand

Wellington is New Zealand’s capital city. It is, by population, the second largest urban area in the country. Lying along the Cook Strait, it is at the southernmost end of North Island. The city was named for the first Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, who was victorious at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The Maori have several names for the area. Te Whanga-nui-a-Tara is their name for the harbour, Poneke is transliteration for Port Nick, and Te Upoko-o-te-a-Maui is a traditional name referring to the demi-god Maui.
