Taupo, New Zealand

Taupo, New Zealand is on the shoreline of Lake Taupo, in the middle of the New Zealand’s North Island. The Taupo District Council has its seat here, in the Waikato Region. At the June 2012 estimate, the town had a population over 22,800 people. The city was officially declared a borough; however, it has been commonly referred to as a city. Its full, official name is Taupo-nui-a-Tia. In Maori, that means ‘the great cloak of Tia.’ According to their stories, Tia discovered the lake.

Maori explorers migrated to the country in the 13th century, and soon discovered the lake and its thermal waters. The waters were probably caused by a violent volcanic eruption about 2,000 years ago. Over 20,000 square miles of land was erupted into the sky. European settlers followed in 1840, and unrest followed soon thereafter. Maori were unhappy with the occupancy of European settlers and raided villages many times. An armed constabulary guarded the settlers’ residences in 1867.

Early transportation to the Taupo area was on steam paddlewheel boat and horse-drawn coach. This continued into the 1920s, until a lakeshore road was constructed.
