Nathanael Chalmers was the first white explorer to the area, and he was guided by the chief of the Tuturau, Reko. It is likely they were en route to collect Pounamu, or greenstone. Nicholas von Tunzelmann and William Gilbert Rees were the first settlers in 1860. When gold was discovered in 1862, Rees converted his wool shed into a hotel named the Queen’s Arms. It still stands today as Eichardt’s. The gold mining era gave many Queenstown streets their names, such as Camp Street. Some of the gold rush buildings remain in the town today.
