New Plymouth Airport, New Zealand
New Plymouth Airport was formed in 1933, after the New Plymouth Airport Act was enacted. Located 11 kilometres from the city centre, New Plymouth Airport is the country’s 10th busiest. It serves the city and the Taranaki Region, in which it is located. The airport is on the North Island of New Zealand, on the west coast.
In its early history, the airport had five runways, one of them nearly 5,000 feet long. With the onset of World War II, the airport was transformed into RNZAF Bell Block Airbase. After the war, New Plymouth Airport was returned to civilian use. Over the following few years, the airport infrastructure was improved. Unfortunately, the existing runways weren’t adequate for the mid 20th century larger jet aircraft. A new airfield was planned on Brown Road, now known as Airport Drive. A small hill had to be levelled, an action that resulted in many unhappy local residents. The hill was an old Maori burial ground. Government prevailed, and the hill was levelled.
Today, the airport offers a passenger terminal with a café and Koru Regional Lounge.
Taranaki Aviation Museum

Art Gallery
Govett-Brewster Art Gallery was established in 1970. It is considered Aotearoa New Zealand’s foremost contemporary collection of art. Various media are represented in the collection, including filmmaking and kinetic art. In 1980, after his death, the museum became home to the Collection and Archive of Len Lye, a renowned kinetic artist and filmmaker. There is no admission fee charged to view the museum outstanding collections, and the gallery is easy to find. It stands near the town clock tower.
