Invercargill Airport, New Zealand

Located one nautical mile to the west of Invercargill’s central business district, Invercargill Airport was formed on reclaimed land from the Waihopai/New River Estuary project in 1938. Severe flooding left the aerodrome unusable in 1964 and again in 1987. A flood protection scheme was put in place, and the airport has had no further flooding difficulties. The airport lies below mean sea level in the summer. The original airport was located at Dawson Farm, but it was limited for expansion and was too far from the city. During World War II, the RNZAF used the rudimentary landing strip for emergency purposes.

The first scheduled service from the airport was in place in 1944, with Union Airway flying a Lockheed 10 Electra from Dunedin. Today, the scheduled service is provided by Air New Zealand, Air Nelson, Mount Cook Airline, Mainland Air, and Stewart Air. Destinations are Brisbane (seasonally), Christchurch, Wellington, Stewart Island, and Dunedin, by charter. The modern terminal provides baggage claim, airline ticket desks, toilets, Espresso Plus Café and bar, rental car company kiosk, and the Koru Lounge. A car park provides ample parking. Private, charter, and helicopter flights use the Invercargill Airport.

Stewart Island Flights

This small company is locally owned and operated and provides access to remote areas of Stewart Island. The experienced pilots will take you on sightseeing flights over the beautiful island, and flying in will allow you to spend more time on a trek or swimming the beautiful ocean waters. The Port William Excursion offered by the tour company offers a three-hour coastal and bush walk, overnight in Oban, picnic lunches, and more to make your excursion memorable.
