East Tamaki, New Zealand
East Tamaki is an Auckland, New Zealand suburb residing in the Auckland City local authority. Mostly residential, light industry, and retail, the suburb was home to dairy farms before the 1960s. Smales Mountain is located within the East Tamaki community limits.
In the 1840s, Hone Heke engaged in a rebellion in the Auckland area. The government sought to defend itself with garrison soldiers recruited from retired British soldiers. The first school was established in 1841 by the Catholic Church. Rebels were defeated in about 1848. Four defensive settlements were home to about 800 settlers, and the men were armed with weapons in the event of emergency. Most of their settlers time was spent building roads and preparing the land for planting. In the 1860s, the East Tamaki and Auckland areas were a base against the Maori King Movement. Growth occurred toward the south, along with the development of roads.
In the 20th century, growth was spurred by the trams and railway lines. Soon thereafter, automobiles defined the roadways and suburbs, such as East Tamaki. Many of the original Irish and English settlers to the area have descendents in the East Tamaki and other suburbs today.
