Auckland, New Zealand
Auckland is a metropolitan area of nearly 1.4 million inhabitants. It is Australia’s most populated urban area, with more than 32% of Australia’s population. In the Maori language, the name is Tamaki Makaurau. The world’s largest contingent of Polynesian people live in the city that lies on the Hauraki Gulf, Pacific Ocean. In about 1350, the isthmus was settled by Maori, where they built pa, or fortified villages. There are estimates that over 20,000 Maori people lived in the area before European settlers arrived. With the Europeans came firearms, upsetting the balance of power among the tribes. The warfare didn’t include all tribes, and those who had no weapons were forced to flee the area for refuge. When they weren’t fighting each other, the Maori were fighting the Europeans.
In 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed by the governor, William Hobson. He named the area for George Eden, Earl of Auckland. Eden was the Viceroy of India at the time. The land upon which the city was founded was a gift from Maori iwi Ngati Whatua in a goodwill gesture. The iwi were counting on commercial and political opportunities for their tribe.
The city was built on the Auckland Volcanic Field.
Stardome
One of Auckland’s most renowned attractions is the Stardome Observatory and Planetarium. This is a place where all members of the family can learn something new and be entertained at the same time. Topics range from black holes to astronauts, star fields to space. When the weather permits, the evening shows include a chance to look through the courtyard telescope. The venue is amazing and educational, with programs throughout the year for all ages.
Volcanoes
From outer space to inner space, scientific adventure is readily available to the visitor. Tour a volcano on a geotour with a geologist. You’ll study the inner workings of a volcano, observe old Mesozoic sediments, among others, and cover a lot of ground on the guided tour. The volcanoes on which Auckland is partially established are extinct, but there is some activity in those further to the east. You’ll learn it all on a volcano geology tour.
